Programs and activities:

Ongoing programs: 1. The National STEM Fair Network comprises over 100 YSC-affiliated regional organizations in every province and territory that welcome approximately 25,000 K-12 students every year. In 2021, 75 regions held fairs (almost all virtual), 24 regions affiliated but held no fair and 7 did not affiliate. 2. Canada-Wide Science Fair (CWSF) normally brings 500 grade 7-12 youth from over 100 regional STEM fairs together for a week of networking, competition and fun. CWSF 2021 was held virtually from May 17-21 with 337 projects by 374 finalists. 3. Team Canada-ISEF, Team Canada-MILSET and Team Canada-EUCYS provide outstanding young Canadian scientists with an opportunity to benchmark their projects against the best in the world. In 2021, eight finalists with six projects were selected to Team Canada-ISEF. They participated in a virtual version of the event from May 16-21 winning four awards. The two Best Project Award winners from CWSF 2021 represented Canada at the virtual 2021 European Union Contest for Young Scientists (EUCYS) from September 17-19, winning two awards. 4. Smarter Science is a framework for teaching and learning science in K-12 featuring professional learning workshops and resources to help teachers introduce inquiry and project-based STEM in their classrooms.

New programs: National Youth STEM Project Development focuses on developing online and community-based support for youth working on STEM projects. In 2021, YSC launched mySTEMspace, a new web site, and the new YSC Portal to support registration of youth at the entry, regional and national levels as well as the management of regional STEM fairs and the CWSF.
