Programs and activities:

Ongoing programs: Our focus is on two fields of work (emergencies and health) in Canada and around the world, four key priorities (readiness, response and recovery; preparedness and risk reduction; advancing reconciliation; and, digital transformation), and eight areas of expertise (direct assistance, training and education, volunteerism, philanthropy, capacity strengthening, influencing humanitarian action, research in action, and granting). These areas are the foundation that we continue to build upon to help people and communities in need and support them in strengthening their resilience. For more information on the work of Canadian Red Cross, please visit www.redcross.ca.

New programs: Canadian Red Cross (CRC) saw the other side of the rapid scale-up for COVID-19. Isolation sites, vaccination clinics, and testing sites were closed and the number of active personnel in our responses reduced significantly. This scale-down and realignment of expertise is a natural dynamic in responding to humanitarian emergencies. CRC also managed a $10 million granting program for the Public Health Agency of Canada to assist with mental health impacts as a result of the pandemic and began work on a $160 million program in support of local community organizations recovering from COVID-19 impacts. Hurricane Fiona was the largest operation in the past year. More than 1,000 staff and volunteers helped to support impacted communities, including at more than 30 sites across four provinces. More than 96,000 households received assistance. CRC teams also responded to other emergencies, with notable responses in Peguis First Nation and Mathias Columb Cree Nation communities in Manitoba, as well as assisting Ukrainian refugees across Canada. Our Health Equipment Loan Program (HELP) provided loans for more than 289,000 medical supports. Teams also made 54,000 Friendly Calls to people in need of emotional support. More than 290 Indigenous communities and organizations were supported by the CRC Help Desk in the past year. Internationally, CRC assisted 78 countries and had a significant role in 29 long-term programs.
