Environmental Defence's activity in 2021-2022 was focused mainly on our work in clean economy, promoting livable communities, protecting Canadians from toxics, protecting clean water and addressing plastic pollution. Our clean economy work highlighted the environmental, social and economic risks of fossil fuels development and highlighted the benefits of taking action on climate change. We also focused on the government’s commitment to phase out fossil fuel subsidies. And we engaged with the federal government’s commitments to put a cap on oil and gas emissions and phase out gas and diesel power cars. We engaged with the government of Ontario on their plan to address the environment and encouraged Ontarians to state their opinion with elected representatives. We worked to raise awareness of the potential impacts of a new 400-series highway in the Greater Toronto Area. In our work around protecting the Great Lakes, we mobilized Ontarians to ask for a stronger Lake Erie Domestic Action Plan to reduce nutrient pollution and to enable mechanisms to generate the funds necessary to protect the Great Lakes. We also turned our attention to the growing threat of plastic pollution in the environment, including plastic beverage containers in Ontario and worked to see Canada commit to addressing plastics at the national level including banning some single use plastics. Our Toxics work continues to educate on the need for reform of the chemicals management plan to further protect Canadians from toxic chemicals that are harmful to both human health and the environment.New programs:
