Programs and activities:

Ongoing programs: Transportation: We develop tools to support rail decarbonization and monitor decarbonization efforts and best practices. We support municipalities in assessing the environmental impacts of telework and commuting. Energy policy: We research and recommend pathways for a lower emissions energy system in Canada in electricity, gas, thermal and other energy sources, and to create conditions for low-emission innovation. We work with communities to identify pathways to help them achieve their emissions reductions targets. We develop an understanding of the future of energy literacy and its relation to climate literacy and to translate energy policy and research for the general audience. We create and deliver webinars and other events to advance thinking for sector decision-makers and leaders. We measure and advance energy literacy in Canada. We manage Energy Ambassadors - a community engagement and capacity building program that supports participation in energy infrastructure consultation processes. Circular Economy: We accelerate the transition from a traditional “take-make-waste” linear economy to a circular economy, where waste is minimized and products and materials are reused, remanufactured, refurbished, recycled, and upcycled. We spearhead the Great Lakes Plastic Cleanup, the single-largest initiative of its kind in the world, using innovative litter capture technologies to collect, remove and analyze plastics and other debris at marinas across the Canadian side of the Great Lakes. Water: We undertake the development of a working prototype that leverages big data and advanced computing to improve watershed planning and predictive decision-making in the Great Lakes. We participate as members of the Annex 3 Chemicals of Mutual Concern Executive Sub-committee for the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement. We protect Canada’s important water resources by advancing policy and collaborative initiatives that address harmful pollutants and other critical issues facing our waterways, including the Great Lakes.

New programs: Transportation: We support the installation of new EV charging stations through a funding program which provides up to 50% of purchase and installation costs to eligible hosts. We conduct national surveys of EV owners to gauge the public EV charging experience and provide recommendations to industry and government on public EV charging. We assess the market readiness of emerging low-carbon on-road freight options on behalf of the Government of Canada. We research and conduct pilot projects on electric school buses and share findings with public and private sector stakeholders across Canada to accelerate deployment. Circular Economy: We lead provincial studies of how phosphorus is used and its movement through provincial economies. We assess how support for nutrient recovery and reuse can improve phosphorus management and contribute to a circular economy. Water: We develop recommendations and a report on the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement that outlines recommendations for strengthening the Agreement’s objectives, structure and governance.
