Programs and activities:
Ongoing programs: Water: We undertook development of a working prototype that leverages big data and advanced computing to improve watershed planning and predictive decision-making in the Great Lakes. We participate as members of the Annex 3 Chemicals of Mutual Concern Executive Sub-committee for the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement. We collect data and develop a report and supporting engagement materials on reducing the impact of pharmaceuticals in the Great Lakes Basin. Energy policy: We research and recommend pathways for a lower emissions energy system in Canada in electricity, gas, thermal and other energy sources, and to create conditions for low-emission innovation. We work with communities to identify pathways to help them achieve their emissions reductions targets. We develop an understanding of the future of energy literacy and its relation to climate literacy and to translate energy policy and research for the general audience. We create and deliver webinars and other events to advance thinking for sector decision-makers and leaders. We measure and advance energy literacy in Canada. We manage Energy Ambassadors - a community engagement and capacity building program that supports participation in energy infrastructure consultation processes. Transportation: We work on the development of a decarbonization roadmap for Canada’s rail sector.
New programs: Circular Economy: We accelerate the transition from a traditional “take-make-waste” linear economy to a circular economy, where waste is minimized and products and materials are reused, remanufactured, refurbished, recycled, and upcycled. We spearhead the Great Lakes Plastic Cleanup, the single-largest initiative of its kind in the world, using innovative litter capture technologies to collect, remove and analyze plastics and other debris at marinas across the Canadian side of the Great Lakes. We support the launch of the Ontario Materials Marketplace, focused on creating a system to recover and reuse valuable plastic that is often sent to landfills. Water: We protect Canada’s important water resources by advancing policy and collaborative initiatives that address harmful pollutants and other critical issues facing our waterways, including the Great Lakes. We develop recommendations and a report on the roles, responsibilities and actions being taken by Canada’s provinces and territories, on issues related to floods, drought and pollution prevention in support of the formation of a Canada Water Agency. Transportation: We develop an online platform to help Canadian municipalities with EV deployment actions. We provide guidance to Natural Resources Canada on how to accelerate the retirement of heavy-emitting freight trucks, with a focus on a scrappage program. We produce a report for Canadian cities to guide them through minimizing transportation sector emissions during the COVID-19 pandemic. We conduct a technical review of the decarbonization potential of gas-powered vehicle technologies to inform federal policies.
